Chiron Line AstroCartography – More Wounds or Healing?
Are Chiron lines (Astro-Cartography) a good thing or a bad thing? If you have studied a little Astrology, you may well be familiar with Chiron the centaur, said to be the ‘wounded healer’. So – what happens when you move to a Chiron line or find yourself travelling to a Chiron line in Astro-Locality? Do you heal? Or do all the old wounds re-surface? Read on to find out more about the energetics of Chiron lines.
In this guide I’ll cover what the Chiron lines represent in Astro-Cartography and locational astrology, what some of their hallmarks are, as well as sharing some of my own personal experiences from Chiron places and anecdotes.
What is a Chiron Line (AstroCartography)?
The meaning of all Astrocartography lines is that they represent the energy of the planet that they correspond to, as well as the angle in your chart (more on how to interpret that below). So a Chiron line is an opportunity to work with the dwarf planet Chiron and his astrological symbolism – when you travel to, live on or connect with a Chiron place in your Astrocartography, you will get to experience the Chiron ‘medicine’.
And Chiron has no shortage of that to offer…
How Chironic energy will manifest for you in your Astrocartography depends on how he is placed within your birth chart (for help on interpreting and working with this, you can book an individual session with me to explore your Astrocartography and how it connects to your natal chart).
As a centaur (half man, half horse), Chiron is traditionally known as the ‘wounded healer’ in Astrology — with a range of different opinions on the potential that working with his medicine offer being present. We will explore more about his myth below, and the different ways it can play out.
Many people consider Chiron energy with trepidation and apprehension, because it has become known as what hurts. What is painful, and what is wounded – a wound that we all carry within us somewhere.
And so, when we travel or move to a place that has strong Chiron energy for us we can feel that wound more strongly. But that is not all there is to Chiron lines and his wisdom…
The Myth of Chiron
With Chiron, it is especially important to look at his myth to understand the symbolism that he holds. Chiron, was the fairest of all the centaurs – who were generally a boisterous lot, causing a lot of trouble in Ancient Greece – but not Chiron.
Chiron’s tale is about how he was wounded and his efforts to heal. From his very conception we see deep wounding. His father – Cronos (Saturn) took a fancy to the beautiful water nymph Philyra, Chiron’s mother, took the form of a horse, and raped her – and so we see that even Chiron’s conception is a story of violation and wounding.
At birth, Chiron was then rejected by his mother, Philyra, for looking nothing like her. As a baby, he suffered the core, root wound of abandonment by the very people who were supposed to love and nourish him – both of his parents. Instead, he was fostered by the sun god, Apollo, who taught him many of the healing arts.
Later, Chiron is wounded in his foot by an arrow dipped in poison of the Hydra – there are different accounts as to how, but it is considered a tragic accident. This poison is potent enough to kill a man, but because Chiron was a demi-god – that is, half man, half god – he could not die. None the less his poisoned wound was excruciating. Despite all the healing wisdom he had gained from studying with Apollo, Chiron could not heal his own wound.
Chiron went on, deepening in his study of the healing arts, becoming a master astrologer, shaman, herbalist and hands-on healer. He became teacher of Achilles. And yet, Chiron could not heal or release himself from the pain of his own wound. The story ends with Chiron trading his immortality and ascending to the heavens as the constellation of Centaurus (not to be confused with Sagittarius, they are two separate constellations) to find relief from his pain.
Can we ‘Heal the Ouch’?
And so here we see Chiron with multiple wounds – on an emotional and physical level. His first wound, abandonment, is deeply emotional. His second wound, from the poisoned arrow, is deeply physical.
We see in the myth that Chiron is driven by his pain – both emotional and physical – to become a healer. It is primarily through his own suffering that he becomes such a master of the healing arts and a teacher to others.
Perhaps that story feels familiar?
In the myth, Chiron cannot heal his own wound, no matter how well he is able to help others. In the end, his only ‘way out’ is to ascend from his physical form – to pass beyond the rainbow bridge – and to take his place in the sky with the stars.
And yet, from what I have seen and believe, the way Chiron plays out for us personally through our astrology feels different.
I prefer to call him the ‘Teacher of Healing‘ rather than the Wounded Healer.
Chiron in our charts shows us our core wound which we all have – where it hurts the most (chronic comes from Chiron) – which can be emotional or physical – or both – and motivates us to heal.
Based on all that we learn we can both alleviate our own suffering as well as help others with similar wounds to heal.
It is no accident that the glyph of Chiron has a stem that looks like a key. Chiron is the key that opens our hearts and also leads us to our healing gifts – from the places that we feel hurt.
In a recent podcast episode with my friend and teacher Dr Mia Hetenyi, she called Chiron the “God point” – meaning, the point that brings us to god. The force that brings us to surrender to the divine, to believe in a force greater than ourselves, and to ask for help from our guides and teachers to help ease and guide our human journey.
It is our very wounds that lead us to our gifts and the Chiron journey is both – the wounds and the healing.
Stories from my Chiron Line (AstroCartography)
I have spent time in two places with significant Chiron lines or parans going through them. Both brought up themes of wounding and healing in their own way for me.
One of my Chiron places I have spent the most time in is New York City. In my previous corporate travel job, I used to travel there for regular stints, and around 2011 I found myself posted to the New York office for 3 months over the summer. Fun! And it was, in part, but some pretty big wounds came up too.
First, my company refused to find me a decent place to stay. Hotel & serviced apartment rates in NYC were crazy high and my company were miserly with accommodation budgets. My first couple of nights in the city were spent in a dodgy motel near the port authority bus terminal in midtown Manhattan (not exactly the best side of the city) with I’m pretty sure ladies who were “doing their business of the night” as my neighbours.
After the first few nights and contemplating getting on the first flight home, I put my foot down and demanded somewhere better. I got a much better area (Upper West Side) but the apartments were still cockroach infested and miserable.
What Chironic influence was at play here? Well I had Chiron on my IC (home, roots) crossing my Moon (emotional nourishment, home & family). My wounds around not feeling at home, not feeling nourished at home and not being provided a good home, and no-one listening to my needs were all coming up…
It was also during my stay in NYC that deep emotional wounds in relationships came up for healing and I decided to end a long term relationship.
Home issues and emotional healing aside, I loved much of my time in NYC. It has always felt like a second home (but that’s my Moon not Chiron influence – you can read more on Moon lines here.)
The second place I have travelled to with one of my Chiron lines running through it is Iran. I visited Iran in 2017. My Chiron DC line runs through here, and it was a place where I experienced more relationship issues coming up, and my core abandonment wound being activated through relationships.
As you can see from these stories, although both places held their challenges and wounds that came up, neither of them were awful experiences.
Chiron Places call to us when it’s Time to Heal
What I have seen with Chiron lines is that they call to us when we are in need of healing. When it is time to further immerse ourselves in our healing gifts.
Chiron lines can be great places for retreats and healing work. One of my friends literally travelled to her Chiron line for a Conference run by ‘Healy’! You cannot get more Chiron-line than that. But in the process she made many new friends and got some much needed rest that her body had been asking for, too.
And so, Chiron lines are not places to be feared.
Another friend who had been contemplating separating from her husband moved to a Chiron place. They ended up doing a lot of couples therapy in the Chiron place and working through of issues – but in the end decided they wanted to separate. It was a deeply healing (Chiron) experience for her, as she realised her power she had been keeping down all along due to old wounds…
Chiron places may feel like they are meant for us for a reason or a season.. but possibly not a lifetime.
What I mean by that is that Chiron lines and places can be incredibly supportive for short – medium periods of time while you heal and deepen into your healing gifts. You may decide it is not energy you want to spend your whole life living on – because healing all the time can feel like hard work.
Theres nothing wrong with moving to Chiron lines when we have healing to do – just remember, we all deserve to have joy too!
Types of Chiron Line in Astro-Cartography
On ACG maps or AstroCartography maps you’ll find several different variations of Chiron Lines and energy.
There are 4 different variants of the AstroCartography Chiron Line which work with the angles of your chart.
As always, please remember that how this energy shows up for you depends on your natal Chiron placement and the rest of your chart. If you’d like to know what that means for you, you can book an AstroCartography session with me here.
- Chiron AS Line (Ascendant) – This is Chiron rising. Here, with Chiron on the rise, Chiron is initiating you into becoming the healer. This is a great position if you are a healer and wanting to share more of your work in the world – just be aware that you will be initiated through your own healing journey too. If you desire to deepen into some form of healing study, this is also a great place to do that. Chiron AS Lines can bring up health issues and physical healing as well – if you’ve had chronic nagging conditions, or health concerns, Chiron will bring these up so that they can receive healing in these places.
- Chiron MC Line (Midheaven) – This is potentially a powerful place for healers and if you are doing any kind of healing work through your profession, from mainstream medicine to indigenous and spiritual healing practices. Here your healing gifts and abilities come into focus, but it can also be a place where wounds around your work and public image come into focus. Something you feel particularly vulnerable around could come to light, or you could find your healing work thrust into the limelight — whichever way it goes, this place reminds us that we teach what we need to learn.
- Chiron DC Line (Descendant) – One of the more challenging Chiron lines, Chiron on the Descendant brings up your deepest wounds in relationships – especially partnerships, marriages, romantic relationships and close one on one connections. Here you are encouraged to go to the root of the pattern so that you can heal it. It’s a good place to start couples therapy or other types of healing work with your loved one – but this is not a light breezy place for a romantic getaway as you may find that everything feels painful in love.
- Chiron IC Line (Immum Coeli) – Are you ready to heal that childhood trauma and wounding? Here you will be called to do so. Wounds around your home, roots, family and lineage / ancestry will keep coming up until you see the pattern and are prepared to do the healing work that Chiron is guiding you towards. This line carries the energy of “going home to heal” – it may be some of the most important healing work you do in your life, but don’t expect it to feel fun or light.
