Mars Line AstroCartography – Courage or Conflict?
What do Mars Lines (AstroCartography) feel like? When you see a Mars Line in your AstroCartography, should you run to it or away from it as fast as you can? (How very Mars!) – read on to find out how AstroCartography Mars lines can express and what you need to consider if you’re looking at relocating to a Mars place in your AstroLocality.
In this guide I’ll cover what Mars lines represent in Astro-Cartography and locational astrology, what some of their hallmarks are, as well as sharing some of my own personal experiences from Mars places and anecdotes.
What is a Mars Line (AstroCartography)?
The meaning of all Astrocartography lines is that they represent the energy of the planet that they correspond to, as well as the angle in your chart (more on how to interpret that below).
So a Mars line is an opportunity to work with the ‘Red Planet’ and his astrological symbolism – when you travel to, live on or connect with a Mars place in your Astrocartography, you will get to experience Mars energy – as he shows up in your birth chart (it’s different for everyone).
And Mars has plenty of energy to go around!
How Mars energy will manifest for you in your Astrocartography depends on how he is placed within your birth chart (for help on interpreting and working with this, you can book an individual session with me to explore your Astrocartography and how it connects to your natal chart).
The truth is that Mars lines do not come up as frequently as many of the other planetary lines as top choices for people to move to. While I have seen many people feeling strong calls to Moon, Neptune or Venus places, Mars often does not make the top cut.
Mars is the warrior in our astrological pantheon, he is the ruler of Aries and the traditional ruler of Scorpio (before Pluto was discovered, and is still used by traditional astrologers as the ruler of Scorpio). He stands for many things, including war, courage, combat and conflict/fighting (whether verbal or physical) and also our physical energy.
Mars is also our drive, our courage, our passion, intensity and our ability to go after what we want. As with any planet, Mars can express through his higher, more empowered octave, or in his lower, more destructive energy.

Why Would you go to a Mars AstroLocality Line?
Given some of the more negative connotations of Mars, you might wonder, why would anyone go to a Mars line? But there are more positive ways in which this energy can express.
In his more productive manifestations, Mars can boost our confidence, make us more assertive (which can be useful if you’ve found yourself struggling with boundaries, speaking your needs, or getting stuck in people pleasing patterns).
Mars also supports us in working with our sexuality, and our energy levels in general. In Mars places we can receive a boost in our drive and physical energy – but watch it does not go into overdrive which can feel like “go go go” leaving little time to rest and relax, without feeling pressure to be active.
Mars can also be supportive with helping us to “make a clean break” – Mars is the energy of the sword, and is associated with splits and rifts – which can serve us when we are trying to sever ties with someone or something, when we want to start fresh, and receive a boost of new energy to move us forward.
And of course, if we find ourselves in a place where we have been lacking physical energy or motivation to do the things we want, connecting to a Mars place in your AstroCartography can help give that boost of physical energy you need – but be aware that if you are recovering from fatigue or burnout, Mars is prone to overdoing things.

Use Mars, before Mars Uses you…
Mars is traditionally known as a malefic planet in Astrology. Which means, his impact is traditionally interpreted to be more harmful than good. Saturn is the greater Malefic, and Mars the lesser Malefic. Which helps to put his energy in Astromaps into perspective.
How I have seen Mars energy play out in a destructive rather than positive way, is when his energy does not have a physical outlet.
If we can develop a positive physical outlet for Mars energy – such as physical exercise, breath work, creative projects, or other ways of physically moving energy, then Mars can be supportive for an energy boost and give us courage and added drive.
It is when Mars does not have a physical outlet that he tends to get destructive. The energy builds up and can turn into pent up frustration, destruction, conflict or other challenging expressions, depending on how Mars is placed in your Astrological natal chart.
This is why I say to my clients – use Mars before Mars uses you. This is not a chilled-out energy you can just sit on!
Stories from AstroCartography Mars Lines
For me personally, Mars has not been a big player in my AstroCartography. What I mean by that is, there are not many Mars places that have called to me – unlike say my experiences with Jupiter, Venus and even Saturn which have called loudly.
Maybe its my natal Mars in Taurus (said so be in Exile or Detriment, or at any rate falling under the rules of Venus) that knows that it’s better for me to avoid Mars places. Maybe it’s my Mars conjunct my Sun said to be in the underworld that would rather lurk out of view…
The few Mars places I do have direct experiences in, I have noticed threads of frustration, and a tendency towards emotional outbursts. Doha Airport in Qatar, where a Mars line runs almost directly through for me has never been a pleasant experience changing flights: Too many people, too busy, too much hubbub and manic energy – this can also be very Mars, in that everything is too stimulating.
In my Local Space, I notice that I’ve been on surfing holidays in multiple places along my Mars line – perhaps channelling the physical energy to ride the waves. Both experiences felt stressful, not very relaxing and I had more than one emotional meltdown!
Others I know, who are naturally more Martian types (Aries & Scorpio) have had better experiences. One friend spontaneously took a trip to her Mars AS line and ran a marathon there with very little training! You cannot get more Mars than that.
In other cases I have seen Mars energy being projected onto others, where we do not fail to integrate it ourselves and has been the cause of big rifts, separation, and conflict.
Left un-integrated, too much Mars energy brought up by Mars lines can create havoc.
Have we Integrated our Inner Masculine?
One of the questions that Mars lines or places in the Astro Locality bring up is how connected are we to our inner and outer masculine energy?
Where we find ourselves drawn to Mars places, it can be a sign that energy is looking to be worked with and reclaimed, in its healthy form. We all have this energy inside of us to some degree, but too often it is pushed aside, or projected on to external partners, especially for women but regardless of gender.
Mars calls us to embody the qualities of our own masculine energy as shown in our birth charts so that we can own it for ourselves.
Types of Mars Line in AstroCartography
On ACG Maps or AstroCartography maps you’ll find several different variations of Mars Lines and energy.
There are 4 different variants of the AstroCartography Mars Line which work with the angles of your chart.
As always, please remember that how this energy shows up for you depends on your natal Mars placement and the rest of your chart. If you’d like to know what that means for you, you can book an AstroCartography session with me here.
- Mars AS Line (Ascendant) – This is Mars rising. Here, with Mars on your (relocated) Ascendant, mars asks you to dig deep to find your inner strength, courage, direction and passions and to focus your energy. In many ways this can be the easiest Mars line to work with, as you get to channel the energy of Mars directly through you and your physical body. A good place to go for a boost of drive, energy, or to your sexuality!
- Mars MC Line (Midheaven) – Mars on the Midheaven shows a relentless, penetrating focus on your career and purpose work. You have an intense drive to reach the top, at the risk of all work no play. These places indicate a much more masculine working environment and focus, or support working with Men. At their worst, they can bring out conflicts and fights for dominance around your work, angst at the office or petty fights and power struggles.
- Mars DC Line (Descendant) – Mars on the Descendant could pave the way to finding your Masculine counterpart, but you’d be wise not to stay here unless you’re the type for dramatic fights and making up. Often, Mars on the Descendant can show us where we split from others, where conflict in our partnerships is highlighted, and bring up frustration from below the surface to be faced. Honeymoon energy this is not – unless you prefer drama and flair to relaxing on the beach.
- Mars IC Line (Immum Coeli) – Mars IC lines often indicate where we split away from home, from our roots or from our family. They can also bring out a wounded inner child or angry inner part of us that feels it is time to vent all their anger and frustrations. This can be deeply challenging energy and the best way to deal with it is to channel this energy into something positive. Breathwork, where you breathe the energy of Mars up and through you can be supportive here, or finding other outlets for your inner warrior to express. If left stuffed down, Mars creates havoc at home here.
